Hicks and Holmested is a client-focused design studio established in 2016 by principal architect Joanna Bridle.
In the last 5 years, HH have completed a number of projects across Sydney as well as mid-north coast of NSW, the Gold Coast, and Tasmania. We take on all size jobs - from unique 'face lifts' of existing buildings to significant alterations and additions of heritage conservation/heritage-listed houses and new bespoke single residential dwellings.
Joanna graduated from the University of Sydney in 2011 and worked at several award-winning practices across Sydney prior to establishing HH. Joanna has a comprehensive range of experience within the Sydney residential sector, working closely with the majority of the notable (or should we say notorious) Sydney local councils to ensure successful planning applications.
The name Hicks and Holmested was created from Joanna's mother's and grandmother's maiden names that were lost due to female lineage. Both names had significant family trees within the UK, with Holmested dating back to the 12 century. Joanna chose to reinstate her family names to pay homage to the two strong female leads in her life who shaped her into the person she is today.
Collaboration, communication, and trust are the three main objectives of our practice. We refer to and utilise these objectives throughout the entire duration of a project to ensure we establish and maintain good client-architect relationships.

We enjoy all stages of the process - from developing the initial concepts during sketch design with our clients, right through to construction completion and key handover. This begins with developing initial ideas as a collaboration with our clients, using tools such as Pinterest and Instagram to assist and determine our client's style, brief, and direction. We can then manage every stage with as much or as little client involvement as the client desires, however also understanding that working towards a certain budget is key, and flexibility in services is always very important.
